Man Found in Closed Church Tells Police He Needed Restroom

Sean Michael Moore, of St. Charles, was charged with burglary after he was found inside the CrossWay Church at 3:30 a.m.

A St. Charles man who told police he stopped to use the restroom faces a criminal charge for entering a St. Charles church at about 2:56 a.m. Thursday.

St. Charles Police said a burglar alarm was activated about that time at CrossWay Church at 420 Hemsath. The church’s pastor came to re-set the alarm at about 3:24 a.m. and found an unlocked door at the church, police said. As he drove around the building, he saw a man inside the building.

The pastor later identified a man police arrested outside the church, Sean Michael Moore, as the man he saw inside the building, according to a court document.

Moore told police he had come inside the building to use the restroom after finding a door unlocked, police reported.

"I didn't break into that building. It was unlocked and I just needed to pee," Moore told police according to a court document.

Police found a computer bag in the restroom, and said it normally is kept in the church office. Nothing was stolen from the church, police said. Moore also spent nearly half an hour inside the church, police said.

According to a court document, St. Charles County officials were investigating an accident on Arena Parkway earlier that morning in which a motorist left the scene. A license plate number of the fleeing car was given to investigators, who found it was issued to Moore.

St. Charles Police said Moore appeared to be intoxicated when he was arrested at the church.

Moore posted 10 percent of a $10,000 bond April 29 and was released from St. Charles County jail.
