A plan two years in the making to alleviate congestion at Mid Rivers Mall Drive and Interstate 70 should begin work as soon as next month. Thursday afternoon the Missouri Department of Transportation hosted an open house at St. Peters City Hall to introduce the public to plans to reconfigured the heavily-trafficked interchange. Plans for a new diverging diamond interchange were unveiled and explained to the public in attendance. "This is just another old interchange that needed to be updated to handle the volume of traffic it's trying to handle," said Russ Batzel, the public works service manager for St. Peters. Underneath the new Central School Road overpass, the ribbon was cut early Thursday to symbolically open the second phase of the Route 364 project. Officials from St. Peters, St. Charles County, the Missouri Department of Transportation and representatives of both the state and federal governments convened to celebrate the opening of the second phase of the Page Avenue Extension. Ed Hassinger, MoDOT St. Louis District Engineer, said the project was opening two months ahead of schedule and one million under budget. The Missouri Department of Transportation announced Thursday that the second phase of the project will be ready for traffic on Thursday, Aug. 30. The opening date is two months ahead of schedule. The second phase of the project is a six-mile stretch from Harvester Road to Mid Rivers Mall Drive in St. Peters. What in the world happened? Did you open it too early??? The traffic jam was ridiculous. It wasn't as bad when the new highway wasn't "open". Why would you close down 3 lanes on opening day? Very disappointing and a big waste of commuters time and fuel.   more ›
