FHN Teacher's Request for Leave Denied by District

Supporters of newly-elected State Rep. Bryan Spencer asked the Francis Howell school board to reconsider his request for a leave of absence while he serves in the state legislature.

Newly-elected State Rep. Bryan Spencer, R-District 63, worked his last day as a special education teacher for Francis Howell North High School on Jan. 7 and was sworn in as a state legislator on Jan. 9.  Now he's fighting to be granted an unpaid leave of absence by the Francis Howell Board of Education which has twice denied his request, he said.  Spencer said he'd like the opportunity to come back to the district as a teacher after serving the community as a state legislator. Under state law, legislators cannot hold government jobs, including teaching positions, during their term.  Spencer could serve up to eight years if he is elected to four two-year terms.  "I don't want to be a career politician," Spencer said. He's worked for the …

Ok, what happens in 4 or 8 years when he returns, the District is supposed to dump a teacher of less tenure so he can have his job back? If he is a skilled and experienced teacher then his resume should bubble to the top of any stack of resumes. Maybe I am missing something but I doubt my employer would offer me the same...   more ›

Francis Howell Board Considers Reducing Meetings

The Board of Education discussed a plan to meet once a month as opposed to the current plan of two meetings a month.

The Francis Howell Board of Education considered meeting less often in an effort to ease the workload of administrators and staff.  A proposal was presented during Thursday's meeting that would cut the number of meetings during the next school year in half. Instead of meeting twice a month, the revised schedule would have the Board meet just once a month.  Superintendent Pam Sloan said the administration is constantly working to prep for Board meetings. Once a meeting ends on Thursday, the next day work begins for the next meeting. Sloan said that a lot of regular agenda items like financial reports can easily be moved to a once-a-month schedule. The board, however, wasn't entirely behind the idea. Vice President Mark Lafata has often …

Candidates Offer Suggestions for Ending Tension on Francis Howell School Board

Board candidates weigh in on what's needed for the board to get along.

Francis Howell Board of Education candidates said Thursday that respect for one another is key to having a board that functions well.  The candidates weighed in during a "Meet the Candidates Night" held Thursday. Student journalists from FHNtoday.com hosted the event. Read an excerpt of some of the candidate answers here. During the past several years, the board has been fraught with tension. In March 2011, Board member Amy McEvoy sought to censure board members Mark Lafata, Stephen Johnson and Mike Hoehn for their behavior toward district employees, but after arguing for 40 minutes over setting a date to discuss the censure, she dropped the issue. In 2009, disagreements led to board members abruptly leaving meetings, and an effort at …

Your facts are in error. Amy filed a censure on Mark Lafatta only. Mark Lafatta is the only one who has left the meetings in a huff. This board gets along much better than boards in the past. When Lafatta was the president, he would not even allow the three opposing board members to speak at the meetings. This board won a state award last year. My advise is to vote Hodits out and keep Stephen …   more ›
