High Winds Knock Out Power to Half of Main Street Thursday

Wind, snow left streets wet and Main Street largely deserted Thursday afternoon.

High winds knocked out power to about 10 percent of Ameren UE customers in the St. Charles area on Thursday.  The western half of Main Street in St. Charles was out of power Thursday afternoon, causing many shops to close early.  Owners of Little O's Soda Shop posted on Facebook that they were sorry to have to close, but glad to be able to get some Christmas shopping finished.  By 10 p.m. service was restored to all but 1,640 people in the St. Charles region.

Snow, Freezing Temps and Wind Heading to St. Louis

Local meteorologists are predicting one to three inches will hit the St. Louis area, beginning overnight.

According to local meteorologists, one to three inches of snow may fall across the St. Louis area by Thursday evening. KSDK is reporting snowfall will begin overnight and by sunrise approximately an inch will have fallen. KMOV reports that freezing temperatures are coming along with the snow. Temps around 20 degrees are reportedly expected Thursday, down from Wednesdays temperatures in the 50s. Gusting winds are expected to accompany the cold and snow, which KMOV reports will taper off around noon Thursday with flurries possible in the afternoon. St. Charles Cleans Up Wintery Mix

Some businesses opened, others stayed closed as the streets were cleared.

The roads didn't look so great when Wendy Rackovan, Vice President of Marketing for St. Charles Chamber of Commerce, drove to work Wednesday morning, but by noon, First Capitol Drive was free from snow, she said. The main roads through St. Charles may be clear, but St. Charles Streets Superintendent Dennis Boswell says the snow plows need time and a little help from sun to clear the neighborhoods. "(The roads) are looking better all the time," he said. "The main roads are good, most of them are down to clear pavement." He said the salt combined with additional traffic has helped clear the roads. Twenty-two city trucks have been spreading salt and clearing the roads in 12-hour shifts, he said. Another crew is set to come on at 7 p.m. …

Life in St. Charles

New Town St. Charles Feels Like an Old Town

Photographer captures charm of the new urban community at sunset on a cold winter day.

Located one and a half miles north of Highway 370, New Town is a part of the city of St. Charles, but feels like a town of its own. The urban development area is designed like a traditional neighborhood where the homes, town square and shops are connected by beautiful parks, footbridges and walkways.
