Main Street Trolley to be Auctioned by City

St. Charles City Council declared the trolley surplus. It hasn't been in use since 2010.

St. Charles will auction a trolley that used to run up and down Main Street, despite a push from Mayor Sally Faith to get it up and running again.  The city stopped running the trolley at the end of 2010, citing cost concerns and low ridership. According to a 2010 article published in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, it cost the city more than $60,000 a year to offer the trolley rides free of charge. The city council approved a request to declare the 1999 trolley as surplus property during the Nov. 6 meeting. Council member Mary West, Ward-4, was the only person to vote in support of keeping the trolley. Totally agree s.l.h.!!!!!! It's part of the atmosphere. But St. Charles City is too busy spending $ on other nonsense to keep the things that really are a nice additive to the Old Town district.   more ›

Mayor Pushes for Return of Main Street Trolley

Council considers using money slated for trolley to revamp tourism center instead.

Trolleys likely won't make a return to Main Street St. Charles in 2013, despite an effort from Mayor Sally Faith to include funding for them in the budget.  Faith budgeted $30,000 to bring back the rubber-wheeled trolley buses in her 2013 budget proposal. In 2010 the city decided to stop running the free trolley due to budget concerns.  Faith has tried included funding to bring back the trolley last year as well.  "Really and truly we need this trolley," she said. "We need two trolleys to keep going and doing and everything. I think this is a great idea. St Charles can use the tourist dollars. I think the tolley can add value to persons who choose historic St Charles as a destination.   more ›
