Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) has defeated Republican challenger Todd Akin in the U.S. Senate race in Missouri. With 55 percent of the precincts counted on the Missouri Secretary of State's website, unofficial results show McCaskill currently winning by more than 138,000 votes as of 10:10 p.m. Ballots are still being counted in Missouri. On Saturday night, Republican U.S. Senate candidate Todd Akin held what an aide said would likely be the campaign's last campaign rally in St. Louis prior to Tuesday's general election. A week from today the election season will all be over. All the ads, yard signs and campaigning will be done. In Missouri, one of the most contested, and publicized races, will be finished. Voters will finally get to decide who takes one of Missouri's two seats in the United States Senate. Incumbent Claire McCaskill, a Democrat, is battling with Republican Todd Akin in a tight race. Patch readers, however, haven't seen the race as that close. Twice readers have been asked who they favored in the race and both times Akin came out on top. In the first poll, Akin topped McCaskill with 71 percent of the votes (88 total). McCaskill picked up only 35 votes (28 percent). Incumbent Sen. Claire McCaskill faced off tonight against challenger Rep. Todd Akin at Clayton High School. The event began at 7 p.m. and was aired live on KSDK NewsChannel 5. The race has been hotly contested with its fair share of national coverage since Akin's remarks in August regarding legitimate rape. One month from today the election season will be over. In four weeks it will be Nov. 6 and voters will finally get to have their voice heard. Voters in Missouri will get a chance to fill a seat in the United States Senate. In a contentious battle, one that has garnered national attention, incumbent Democrat Claire McCaskill and Republican challenger Todd Akin are battling for one of Missouri's two Senate seats. He says he's in it to win it. With an official deadline having passed Tuesday night for candidates on the November ballot to petition via a court order for removal, U.S. Rep. Todd Akin's U.S. Senate bid is moving forward. Akin, the Widwood Republican who had been cast out by party leaders at the national level as well as five current or former Missouri U.S. Senators who called for him to drop out of the race following his controversial remarks about rape and pregnancy last month, has recouped some of that support.
