Summer Camp Has Theatrical Appeal

Campers to perform "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat."

Summer camp isn't just swimming, arts and crafts, camping out and s'mores anymore. For the 15 campers at St. John United Church of Christ, it's all about putting on a show. The church is sponsoring a two-week performing arts camp in the church gymnasium. The camp culminates with three public performances of the popular musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. The camp is run by Sarah Price, director of music and worship arts at St. John, and the show is directed by Debbie Ladd, a former theater teacher and member of the congregation. "We were brainstorming about what to do with the kids this summer, and I said, 'Let's put on a play!'" In its first year, the performing arts camp drew 15 participants from seven local high …

Urban Housing, Retail May Line Fifth Street Corridor

Developers suggest plans for Fifth Street and hospital area.

Developers at The Lawrence Group have slowly begun to narrow down suggestions for improvements along Fifth Street. Improvements Sought for Fifth Street Corridor, Area Around Hospital

St. Charles hosts first of many public meetings.

About 50 property owners, residents, and developers met Thursday at St. John United Church of Christ Fellowship Hall to join the round table discussions lead by The Lawrence Group, Crawford Bunte & Brammeier (CBB), and Development Strategies. Public meetings will be held to discuss two separate projects. The first project would improve the flow of traffic down Fifth Street. The second project would encourage development near the hospital and make the area around the hospital more pedestrian-friendly. Craig Lewis is the consultant project manager for The Lawrence Group. Lewis and …

Local Church Hosts Benefit for Tornado Relief

St. John United Church of Christ hosts “Art Gives Back,” a concert and silent auction to benefit area residents affected by the tornadoes of 2011.

Sarah Price, director of music and worship arts for St. John United Church of Christ in St. Charles, directed the adult choir on Good Friday with one eye on the music and one eye on the storm outside the stained glass windows in the sanctuary. “We got through the cantata on Good Friday, then moved everybody into the basement," Price said. The Good Friday tornadoes devastated sections of the cities of Bridgeton, St. Ann and Maryland Heights and also damaged areas in New Melle in St. Charles County. On Saturday afternoon, Price, a soprano, and friend Jon Garrett, a tenor, gathered in that same sanctuary to raise money to help those whose homes were damaged in the storm.  Price and Garrett collaborated with accompanist Nancy Mayo and artist …
