A St. Charles man faces criminal charges after police said he attacked his wife and his mother-in-law Sunday. Shawn Sept, 33, of the 1900 block of Santa Fe in St. Charles, was charged Monday with two counts of third-degree domestic assault. St. Charles Police said Sept and his wife and mother-in-law were arguing when Sept began punching his wife. When his mother-in-law tried to get him to stop, he slapped her and continued assaulting his wife by hitting and biting her, according to the police report. Police said he stopped the assault after his mother-in-law got him in a choke-hold and a neighbor was able to get him to calm down. Police said Sept has previous arrests for domestic violence. A St. Charles man injured a St. Charles woman Nov. 30 by throwing her down, police said. St. Charles Police said that John W. Smelser, 36, was in a rage at the victim when he kicked in a locked door in the 3200 block of Janton Lane in St. Charles, then pushed his mother aside and kicked in a locked bedroom door. He then grabbed the woman and threw her on the floor, injuring her back and hand, police said. Smelser, of the 2400 block of Chartom Mar Drive in St. Charles, was charged Dec. 3 with third-degree domestic assault. Bail was set at $5,000, and he is to have no contact with the victim. A St. Charles man struck his girlfriend with a computer power cord, a belt and his hand on Saturday, St. Charles Police said. Ali Hadi Abaalharith, 25, of the 1600 block of Meyer Drive in St. Charles, was charged Monday with third-degree domestic assault. St. Charles Police said Abaalharith struck the woman with a leather belt five or six times and told her to stay upstairs in a bedroom or “something bad would happen to her.” Police gave the following account: She went downstairs to smoke a cigarette, and Abaalharith grabbed her by the hair and dragged her upstairs. Linda Cerutti wasn’t what people think of when they think of domestic violence victims, said her daughter, Carrie Brackett. “My mother is by far the strongest person I have ever known in my life,” Brackett said a few days after her mother died June 10. “She was the person I would call for just about anything. I leaned on her. Now, I can’t do that.” Cerutti, of St. Charles, died June 10 from injuries from a May 29 attack. Her live-in boyfriend, Steven Martineau was charged Friday with second-degree murder. He was charged with third-degree domestic assault on Cerutti in February.
