St. Charles Police Department Reorganizes

Also, Police Chief Randy McKinley was sworn in Tuesday.

In January, the St. Charles Police Department got a new police chief and underwent a major reorganization.  The department has moved back to a single-district structure and away from a two-district organization in which the city was split into two areas. The two-district structure was first implemented under former Police Chief Dennis Corley in 2007.  The decision to return to the single-district model was made with input from Interim Police Chief Larry Stulce at the request of Mayor Sally Faith.  City Administrator Michael Spurgeon said city officials felt it would be more efficient to move back to the former model. In making the decision, the city also will not add a substantial amount of space for police in the new public safety …

Staff Cuts Recommended to Save Money in St. Charles Schools

Committee made a number of recommendations for the St. Charles Board of Education to consider as district aims to make $1 million budget cuts.

Staff cuts were among the list of recommendations the St. Charles Board of Education will consider as members try to cut $1 million from next year's budget.  Superintendent Jeff Marion convened a committee of about 50 administrators, staff members, parents and community members to make recommendations for cost-saving measures.  The largest issue the committee will consider is whether it makes sense to consolidate St. Charles West and St. Charles High School into just one high school. The district is paying Dickinson Hussman Architects up to $25,000 to study that issue and report back to the district. The committee is expected to weigh in this spring.  Last year the district cut 10 staff positions through attrition. Marion said the district…

New Superintendent Suggests Studying Future of High Schools Again

Jeff Marion, the incoming superintendent of the St. Charles School District, has suggested the Board of Education study possible long-term solutions to budget problems.

The new superintendent of the St. Charles School District wants to study the cost savings the school district might realize by closing a high school. Jeff Marion, who will take his new position as district superintendent July 1, talked to the Board of Education Feb. 27 about the need for ways to save money over the long run. The district is now trying to cut $2.6 million from the budget over the next two years, in part through cutting 10 positions. One part of the effort to look for long-term solutions would be studying carefully the financial impact of closing a high school. Enrollment at the high schools has dropped to about 1,500 students this year, down from a high of 2,357 students in 1980. "We can't leave any rock unturned," Marion …

St. Charles School District to Redraw Boundaries

A district committee will make recommendations on changes to each school's attendance area.

Hundreds of elementary school students in the St. Charles School District will have to transfer to new elementary schools next year after school boundaries are changed. The boundary lines must be redrawn because the district plans to reopen Blackhurst Elementary School to accommodate growing elementary school enrollment.  The Board of Education closed the school in 2007 and it has been used for storage or rented by various groups since then.  A group of parents, teachers and administrators will meet for the next few months to discuss the issue and is expected to make a recommendation about the new boundary lines to the Board of education by late January, Superintendent Randy Charles said. The committee is tasked with moving 60 students …

I know about this all too well. HSD redistricted a few years after I graduated at I heard from my mom all the time about being upset at my younger sibling having to attend a what she deemed a less preferred school.   more ›
