St. Charles Votes Down Bonds for City Parking Garage Repairs

Other city propositions pass. City will still have to borrow money to make the repairs, but it may cost more money.

St. Charles voters approved propositions to allow the city to issue general obligation bonds to build a new public works facility and a fire house, but narrowly voted against bonds to fix the crumbling city hall parking garage.  Just 313 votes separated the 'no' votes from the 'yes' votes on Proposition 2, which would allow the city to issue $3.3 million in bonds for parking garage repairs, than voted for it.  About 49.5 percent voted in favor of the bonds for the parking garage and 50.5 percent voted against it.  Council members have said the projects are necessary to complete and would be done even if voters failed to approve the propositions.  "We still have to let the voters know this thing needs to get built one way or the other," …

Also, it doesn't have to be exactly like OKC's plan (MAPS was a 1 cent sales tax increase that lasted for 7 years and raised about $777 million). Something more manageable should be pursued in our case. For example, a 1/2 or even 1/4 cent increase in sales tax for a shorter amount of time like 4 or 5 years could yield enough to help fund a lot of the city's projects. Again, this is just an idea …   more ›

St. Charles Seeks $15.7 Million for New Fire Station, Public Works Facility, More

St. Charles will ask voters to approve issuing three propositions in general obligation bonds for a new fire station, public works building, and city parking garage repairs.

St. Charles voters will be asked in November to approve issuing $15.7 million in general obligation bonds this fall to pay for three big projects. St. Charles City Council voted on Tuesday to put the three propositions on the Nov. 6 ballot. Council members say the projects are necessary to complete and will be done even if residents fail to pass the $15.7 million in propositions.   The three propositions are:  City Administrator Michael Spurgeon said using general obligation bonds will allow the city to save $1 million during the 20-year life of the bonds. Should residents fail to approve the propositions, the city would seek a different financing method, which could cost more money in the long-term.  Spurgeon said the city is presenting …

Where to start, well first we have to go back and ask why the city council approved municipal bonds for the streets of St. Charles project knowing good and well that these projects were in waiting. I know they told us that the development would pay for these bonds but here we are several years into this project and we are being warned that the city might have to pitch in some money to pay back …   more ›

St. Charles May Ask Voters to Approve Bonds for New Fire Station, More

City could borrow $7.8 million for new fleet maintenance facility, $4.1 for a new fire station and $3.3 million to repair the city parking garage.

St. Charles may ask voters in November to approve bond issues to pay for building a new fleet maintenance building, a new fire house and for repairs to the city parking garage.  Voters would vote on issuing bonds for three seperate projects individually, although the total borrowed would be about $15.7 million. The council in early August is expected to approve putting the three propositions on the November ballot. Proposition 1 would ask voters to approve borrowing $7.8 million for a fleet maintenance facility. Proposition 2 would approve borrowing $3.3 million for repairs to the city hall parking garage. Proposition 3 would seek approval for borrowing $4.1 million for the new fire house.  The new fire house, which has been dubbed a new …

Mr. Klinghammer is wrong about having a community room for those who live on the north side, there is a very nice one in New Town and all the city has to do is ask. New Town is very accommodating to the city.   more ›
