Patch Participates in National Moment of Silence at 8:30 a.m. Friday

Your local Patch site will go dark during the national observance for the victims of the Sandy Hook tragedy.

Patch sites around America, including yours, will take part in a National Moment of Silence at 8:30 a.m. Central time on Friday. At that hour, the website will go blank for 5 minutes. The page will be replaced by a message noting the National Moment of Silence, and a link will direct viewers to a website that explains ways you can join the campaign to help the people of Sandy Hook. After 5 minutes, the website operation will return to normal.  The Moment of Silence coincides with one across social media sites. Over 100,000 people have pledged not to tweet or post to Facebook, reports TechCrunch, including Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, Britney Spears, Suze Orman, Tyler Florence, Goldie Hawn, and Joe Montana. Patch Editors Volunteer at St. Louis Crisis Nursery

Find out how you can help the nursery, or send your own ideas of places for Patchers to volunteer.

Patch editors in the St. Louis area cleaned, organized, sorted, wiped, hugged and played at the St. Charles location for the St. Louis Crisis Nursery. The Crisis Nursery's mission is to prevent child abuse by providing temporary housing and care for young children in order to give their parents and caretakers the space and time needed to resolve crisis.  Patch editors organized and sanitized toys, cleaned high chairs and walls, put away summer clothes, put babies to sleep and played with the little ones. It's College Colors Day: Show Us Your Fan Photos!

Are you a Mizzou fan? College Colors Day is an annual day where people across the country show their support for their favorite college by wearing its colors.

Mizzou? SLU? Lindenwood? Which college or university lays claim to having the most fans in St. Louis?  Today is College Colors Day, an annual celebration, according to its website, dedicated to promoting the traditions and spirit that make the college experience great by encouraging people across America to wear apparel of their favorite college or university throughout the day. Here at Patch, we're using the day to find out which higher education establishment has the most support in the St. Louis-community. I, myself, am a proud graduate of Southern Illinois University in Carbondale—go Salukis!—but am also a huge fan of Mizzou. What about you? Who doesn't love a tasty dessert? The problem is, not everyone is a baking expert. What's an easy thing to bake for beginners? What's a healthy snack you can bake? Jury Picked for Murder Trial of Francis Howell Graduate

Eight men and four women to decide if Christopher Vaughn, an Oswego, IL, resident and Francis Howell High School graduate, murdered of his wife and three children in 2007.

JOLIET, IL--On the first day of jury selection, eight men and four women were chosen to decide whether Christopher Vaughn, a graduate from Francis Howell High School, walks free or spends the rest of his life behind bars. Vaughn has been locked up in the Will County jail since June 2007 on charges he murdered his wife and children. Vaughn, his wife Kimberly, 34, a 1991 graduate from St. Charles West High School and children Blake, 8, Cassandra, 11, and Abigayle, 12 were heading from their Oswego home to a Springfield waterpark when he pulled off Interstate 55 and stopped on the frontage road outside Channahon. Christopher Vaughn then gunned down his wife and children as they sat in the family's minivan, according to police and prosecutors…
