For 63 years, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venturers have honored the fallen soldiers of America's wars. Sunday, the tradition continued as more than 4,000 scouts and their families braved the heat to place flags on each of the 189,000 graves at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. The National Weather Service is calling for scorching temperatures this Memorial Day weekend. Temperatures for Saturday, Sunday and Monday are expected to be in the mid-90s. Saturday: High 95, low 72 Sunday: High 95, low 74 Monday: High 92, low 69 The Centers for Disease Control offer these basic recommendations that will help prevent heat stroke, sun stroke, dehydration and other potentially dangerous situations that easily develop in times of extreme heat: 1. Do not leave children or pets in cars. Even in cool temperatures, cars can heat up to dangerous temperatures very quickly. Rates increase at three St. Charles Aquatic Facilities.
St. Charles Parks and Recreation's three aquatic parks open May 26 this year. The swimming season varies at each park. McNair Aquatic Park and Blanchette Aquatic Park are open until Aug. 5, while Wapelhorst Aquatic Park is open until Aug. 12, and then on weekends only through Sept. 3. The Parks Department has cut back the hours that Blanchette Aquatic Facility is open on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. to 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. McNair Aquatic Facility will also open at noon instead of 11 a.m., seven days a week. The daily admission fees have increased 50 cents for everyone in St. Charles aquatic parks. O'Fallon also raise admission fees by 50 cents at Alligator's Creek Aquatic Center. Seventh annual festival runs Friday through Sunday in Frontier Park.
The Missouri River Irish Festival has a new date this year and a new slate of activities for festival-goers. The festival has traditionally been held on the third weekend in September- sort of a half-way point to St. Patrick's Day. But that date fell right after the annual Deutschfest Dinner Dance hosted by the Sister Cities Program and right before the annual Oktoberfest. All three events are hosted by Sister Cities, a group that fosters connections between cities in Ireland, Germany and France and St. Charles. "That was three weekends in a row that everybody in Sister Cities was working and it was real hard," said Sandi Riley Swift, entertainment chair for the event.
