Construction on Fifth Street Gateway Project Set for 2014

City officials will reevaluate best use of property at 435 Boone's Lick.

St. Charles is making plans to improve a key gateway into the city: Fifth Street between Boone's Lick Road and First Capitol.  The city received federal Surface Transportation Program funding to create a gateway to the city and make improvements to Fifth Street. The $3.7 million in funds for improvements were awarded by East-West Gateway in 2012. The city is expected to contribute about $960,000 for the project.  For now, plans to build a multi-modal transportation hub at 435 Boone's Lick Drive, which could house a second city visitors center, are being reevaluated. The city applied for both STP funding and the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery 4 Discretionary Grant or TIGER 4 funding for the Fifth Street improvements …

Mayor Pushes for Return of Main Street Trolley

Council considers using money slated for trolley to revamp tourism center instead.

Trolleys likely won't make a return to Main Street St. Charles in 2013, despite an effort from Mayor Sally Faith to include funding for them in the budget.  Faith budgeted $30,000 to bring back the rubber-wheeled trolley buses in her 2013 budget proposal. In 2010 the city decided to stop running the free trolley due to budget concerns.  Faith has tried included funding to bring back the trolley last year as well.  "Really and truly we need this trolley," she said. "We need two trolleys to keep going and doing and everything. I have asked every year and at some point in time... someone will let me get those trolleys."  Councilman Dave Beckering, Ward-7, pointed out that the city had studied the trolley issue before Faith was elected and …

I think this is a great idea. St Charles can use the tourist dollars. I think the tolley can add value to persons who choose historic St Charles as a destination.   more ›

City Buys Former Mary Rents Building

Plan is to turn the property into a visitors center and transportation facility.

St. Charles is a step closer to building a visitors center and transportation facility at the intersection of Fifth Street and Boone's Lick Road. The city council last week approved the purchase of the former Mary Rents property at 453 Boone's Lick Road for $392,000 on an 8-0 vote. Council members Mary West, Ward-4, and Mike Weller, Ward-5, were absent. The property was owned by Carl and Regina Hoerman, who bought it in 1996 for $160,000.Its value had most recently been assessed in 2011 for $207,748. Mary Rents, a tool rental business, moved to their new location on North Second Street in June, which raised questions about whether the city would try to buy it as a possible location for a tourism center. The city plans to use the property …

St. Charles Seeks Grant Funding for Fifth Street, Tourism Center

St. Charles will apply for a TIGER 3 grant to fund 80 percent of $14.5 million improvements to First Capitol, Fifth Street.

St. Charles is eyeing the former Mary Rents building at the corner of Fifth Street and Boone's Lick Road as a possible location for an additional tourism center and a transportation hub for the city.  The tourism center and transportation hub are part of $14.5 million proposed improvement project for the Fifth Street and First Capitol corridor. Relocation of Mary Rents Offers Opportunity for City Welcome Center

Business location on Fifth Street had long been targeted possible welcome center for the city.

A familiar mainstay of S. Fifth Street will be on the move next month as Mary Rents prepares to relocate to new digs in Frenchtown. “We’re not moving far away from our neighborhood,” said Todd Hoerman, owner of the tool rental facility that provides equipment for homeowners and light contractors. “We’re still keeping it in our community, our town.” Mary Rents put up banners this week announcing the impending move. Todd Hoerman got approval for the new location in Frenchtown last fall, but delays prolonged the move, which is set to take place over the 4th of July weekend. The business' current location at the corner of Boone's Lick and S. Fifth Street has long been discussed as a perfect location for a new tourism center for the city. …
