Domestic Violence Victim Was Strong Woman, Daughter Says

"If this could happen to my Mom, it could happen to anybody," said Linda Cerutti's daughter, Carrie Brackett.

Linda Cerutti wasn’t what people think of when they think of domestic violence victims, said her daughter, Carrie Brackett. “My mother is by far the strongest person I have ever known in my life,” Brackett said a few days after her mother died June 10. “She was the person I would call for just about anything. I leaned on her. Now, I can’t do that.” Cerutti, of St. Charles, died June 10 from injuries from a May 29 attack. Her live-in boyfriend, Steven Martineau was charged Friday with second-degree murder. He was charged with third-degree domestic assault on Cerutti in February. Martineau Murdered Girlfriend in May 26 Attack, Police Say

The defendant also is charged with a separate domestic assault on the woman.

A second-degree murder and second-degree domestic assault charges were filed Friday against Steven John Martineau, 48, of the 400 block of Tower Grove in St. Charles. Martineau is accused of killing his girlfriend, Linda Cerutti, 50, who died June 10 from her injuries. St. Charles Police said Martineau and Cerutti argued at their home 400 block of Tower Grove Place in St. Charles. During the argument, Martineau attacked Cerutti, beating her into unconsciousness, police said. She never recovered from her injuries and died 15 days later. According to a news release, investigators used inconsistencies in Martineau’s account of how Cerutti sustained her injuries and information from other sources to develop the case. St. Charles Woman Dies After May 26 Assault

The woman's ex-boyfriend was charged with a Feb. 26 domestic assault, and he is a suspect in the May 29 incident.

Linda Cerutti, of St. Charles, died Sunday as a result of injuries from a May 26 assault. She was 50 years old. Lt. Dave Senter, of St. Charles Police, said the May 26 incident still is under investigation. No one has been charged with the attack. However, police do have a suspect according to court documents. St. Charles Police said in a report that Cerutti’s ex-boyfriend, Steven Martineau, is a suspect in the May 26 assault. Martineau was charged with domestic assault after police reported that he punched Cerutti twice in the face at their shared home in the 400 block of Tower Grove Place in St. Charles Feb. 26.
