District may put bond issue before voters to pay for more than $2.5 million in security improvements and other construction projects.
The district has identified $2.5 million in security upgrades that are needed across the district, including installing an alarm system to the front door of each building, electronic locks and a card entry system. Following the shooting at an elementary school in Newtown, CT on Friday, Superintendent Jeff Marion posted an update online with information about the district's current security measures and plans for improvement. Marion reassured parents that the district staff has had training for situations involving an intruder or an active shooter in the schools. St. Charles School District has moved away from traditional grading and toward Standards Based Grading.
Several members of the St. Charles School Board raised questions about the district's move to standards based grading during a work session with district principals Thursday. Students in grades 1-8 will no longer receive a grade of A through F this year on their report cards. Instead, the students will be evaluated using standards based grading, which gives them a grade of 1-4 on specific skills in each subject. The district introduced standards based grading several years ago and is moving toward using it in all grades by the 2015-2016 school year. Is Standards Based Grading Working? St. Charles Superintendent Randy Charles will retire June 30.
St. Charles School District will host a drop in reception for Superintendent Randy Charles from 3-6 p.m. May 10 at the District Administrative Center. The reception is open to the public. Charles will retire as district superintendent June 30. He was with the district for more than four years as superintendent and has been an educator for 33 years. Charles announced in March 2011 his plans to retire which gave the Board of Education several months to conduct a search for candidates. After a search process that involved input from staff and community members, the Board of Education selected Jeff Marion, current district assistant superintendent of human resources, as the new superintendent. St. Charles School District announced on Friday that Jeff Marion was chosen as the new superintendent for the school district. Current Superintendent Randy Charles announced plans to retire at the end of the 2011-12 school year. Marion will assume his new duties July 1, 2012. Marion has worked for the district as assistant superintendent of human resources for four years.
