Mayor Says City is Addressing Crime on Main Street

Sally Faith sought to clarify a report that shows more than 1,200 police incidents in and around Main Street in 2012.

Mayor Sally Faith sought to clarify a recent report about police incidents on Main Street in 2012 and assure business owners that the city is working on a solution.  According to the report, there were 1,272 incidents on and around Main Street St. Charles between Jan. 1 and July 10, 2012. Faith said she was stressed that the report caused uproar among residents and business owners. She sought to clarify the definition of "incident." "An incident is when my car breaks down and I call for help and a policeman comes and helps me out," she said. "An incident is when a police officer is directed to go down for extra duty." This is a problem in any densly centered mix use area. Do we want Main st. to become the desolate eyesore it was in the '80s? No, but we want to balance the needs of both the residents and the visitors to this popular entertainment area. Interim Police Chief to Evaluate Policing Model for City

Mayor also asks Interim Police Chief Larry Stulce to evaluate possible return to the St. Charles County SWAT program. The city restarted its own SWAT team in 2011.

Interim Police Chief Larry Stulce will spend the next few months evaluating the Police Department's organization and consider a possible return to participating in the St. Charles County's SWAT team.  Stulce was hired in May for a six-month period while the city conducts a search for a replacement police chief.  However, Faith has asked Stulce to examine whether a two-district policing model is the best organization for the city and to examine a return to the county SWAT program.  "His experience in St. Louis and St. Louis County is certainly very valuable and he'll bring that experience to look at this," she said.
