Should Banquet Centers be Allowed in Historic Commercial District?

St. Charles Planning and Zoning Commission will meet with local business owners March 14 to look for a compromise on the issue.

St. Charles Planning and Zoning commissioners plan to meet with people opposed to having banquet centers in the Historic Commercial District in hopes of finding a compromise next week. A community meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m., Wednesday, March 14 at St. Charles City Hall. The commission asked for the meeting with business owners on South Main Street after several people raised concerns about changing the zoning to allow banquet centers in the area. Many spoke of concern that such a move would increase the amount of problems with drunk people in the area.  Sheri Steffans, owner of Heart of St. Charles Banquet Center, spoke in favor of the change. There is nothing wrong with a banquet facility on S. Main Street. It would add new business for everyone in the area. Besides, most any existing restaurant on South Main could host a banquet. The size of the facility would dictate how many people could attend. So long as the banquet facility has to obtain the same permits and licenses as a restaurant, I see no problem.
