Hendricks BBQ in St. Charles thinks its ribs compete with the best in the world. What do you think?
St. Charles' own Hendricks BBQ will put its ribs up against more than 120 other restaurants from around the world during the Memphis in May World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest in Memphis. The event begins today and runs through Saturday. On Hendricks BBQ's Facebook page, the restaurant said, "Making our list and checking it twice! Headed to Memphis in May!!!! Wish us luck!!!" Hendricks is competing in the ribs division, which has the most competition. Other divisions include whole hog and patio porkers. Join St. Charles Patch for more community news or join us on Facebook and Twitter. Hendricks BBQ's ribs were noted by the Riverfront Times as having some of the best ribs in the city. We've never had them. How good are they?
Have you tried Hendricks BBQ's ribs? If not, the Riverfront Times says you're seriously missing. According to RFT, Hendricks' ribs are one of 100 dishes "you must eat right now." From the RFT: The ribs are a standout, succulent, yet you still must bite the meat from the bone -- and then dig and scrape and suck to get all the morsels left behind. As it should be. Vanderbeck smokes both baby-back (half-rack $14, full $22) ribs and St. Louis-cut spare ribs (half-rack $12, full $20). The spare ribs are smaller but meatier. A mild dry rub gilds the pork's natural essence. The baby-back ribs have a stronger woodsmoke profile -- a mix of apple and hickory, to be precise -- and a charred sweetness to the meat. You don't need sauce for these ribs…

Owners plan to distill moonshine and serve it at the Moonshine Blues Bar on the lower level of the restaurant
The owners of Hendricks BBQ are hoping to open the Moonshine Blues Bar in 2013 complete with St. Charles-brewed moonshine. Owners Gurpreet Padda and Ami Hendricks-Grimes have applied to the city to open a distillery in the restaurant, located at 1200 South Main Street. Padda told the St. Charles Planning and Zoning commisison that they plan to produce about 35 gallons of white corn-based whiskey a week. "It'll probably have flavors that will be done as a fruit infusion post production," he said. In addition, they will age some of the moonshine in barrels and offer a tasting room. The Planning and Zoning Commission on Dec. 17 approved a bill that added a distillery as a permitted use for restaurants operating in the planned development…

Barbecue restaurant opened in August. Tell us what you think
When it comes to restaurants, St. Charles has it covered. We have some great local places that many would consider community gems; we have some restaurants that aren't exactly mom-and-pop but are unique to the area; and we certainly—for better or for worse—have plenty of chains lining our main streets. But what we don't have is a consistent food critic to tell us what's good and what's not. That's where you come in. We could throw some money at a professional food critic, but that's not exactly what Patch is all about. We'd much rather know the opinion of the fine folks that eat there day-in and day-out. It's your community. You eat the food. You tell us if it passes the mark. That's why we are introducing The Friday Food Critic, where …

The 600-seat restaurant is located on South Main Street in the old waterworks building.
Hendricks BBQ was set to open on South Main Street in St. Charles in May 2011 when a 16-inch water main burst and flooded the building—ironically, the former St. Charles Waterworks building. Owners Ami Hendricks-Grimes and Gurpreet Padda began all over again—cleaning, restoring and refurnishing the 600-seat restaurant and bar. The blues-themed barbecue restaurant will open Thursday on South Main Street and features a menu straight from a neighborhood backyard barbecue, complete with barbecued beef, pork, sausage and ribs, and the comfort foods we all grew up with and cherish: deviled eggs, sweet potato casserole, potato salad and macaroni and cheese. The difference? "We went all around the country, trying different recipes. And we made …

Wise Owl Resale hosts grand opening celebration Sept. 8.

The barbecue spot is opening at 1200 South Main Street in the former Municipal Waterworks building, which used to be a Maryland Yards. The restaurant is descibed in a press release as "featuring classic American BBQ — offering delicious comfort food, homemade sides, made-from-scratch desserts, specialty cocktails and southern hospitality." Restaurateurs Gurpreet Padda and Amy Grimes are opening the barbecue joint which they described as offering meats that are "slow smoked and dry rubbed" according to an article in Sauce Magazine. They also own four other restaurants including Sanctuaria and Cathedral Square Brewery. Wise Owl Resale A new consignment shop opened up at …

Though I wish them luck, No, I don't think they have a chance for reasons I will keep to myself. Memphis in May is THE biggest BBQ competition of the year, most new comers will be lucky to make the top 25 let alone place.   more ›
