Festivals Donate Funds to Get Electricity in North Frontier Park

The Festival of the Little Hills and Oktoberfest groups each donated money to see electricity expanded into the north side of Frontier Park.

The 2013 St. Charles Oktoberfest celebration will include about 10 to 15 more booths now that electricity is available on the north side of Frontier Park.  Oktoberfest and the Festival of the Little Hills each donated funds, $4,000 and $5,000 respectively, to the St. Charles Parks and Recreation Foundation to help pay to expand the electric access in Frontier Park. Maralee Britton, director of parks and recreation, said in an email the parks department was approached by leaders of both festivals who hoped to see electricity access expanded on the north side of the park.  With very limited electric access, the north end of the park has primarily been used for items that don't require electricity, like the children's area, tractors or ice …

Should St. Charles Bring Back An Ice Skating Rink?

The city offered an ice skating rink in Frontier Park for two years and one Parks Board member wants to see it return.

For two years, visitors to downtown St. Charles could take a spin on an ice skating rink in Frontier Park run by the city during the winter months.  The city shut down the rink after the 2010 season due to cost concerns, but some members of the community are hoping to see it return.  TJ Slattery, a member of the St. Charles Parks and Recreation Board, is campaigning for a joint effort between the Tourism Department, City Council and the Parks and Recreation Department to bring back the ice rink for the 2013-14 winter season.  "I have had a lot of calls this year saying, 'Hey, where is the ice skating rink?'" he said. "I think it's a good amenity. You don't want to overdo it, at the end of the day you want to offer things that are cool like…

Debate Over Dogs at Festivals Begins in St. Charles

Current city law prohibits domesticated animals from Frontier Park during special events, but some say it's unenforceable.

Dogs were among the thousands of attendees of this year's Oktoberfest weekend held in Frontier Park in late September. Some dogs participated in the weiner dog derby, others were brought by their owners. But under city law, dogs and other domesticated animals are technically barred from the park during special events like festivals.  Councilman Jerry Reese, Ward-6, wants to abolish the city law because he said it's unenforceable.  Reese said several people approached him during Oktoberfest to complain about the many dogs in the park, although a large sign is posted saying they are prohibited. "We're not enforcing it," he said.  Enforcement of the ordinance is complicated because dogs cannot be limited from being on the Katy Trail, which …

I've been asked to remove my Service Dog from the park or refused entry by volunteers, which is a Federal Violation of the Service Animal Law. So, before you go and regulate and enforce the law more, you need to train people on the LAW. And if you say that you can not regulate the Katy Trail, then get the volunteers and the tents which block the Katy Trail off during events, OFF OF THE TRAIL.   more ›
