Cappies Review: A Bright Night for 'Brighton Beach Memoirs'

Allie Hult of Holt High School reviews the Francis Howell North High production of 'Brighton Beach Memoirs' for the Cappies, the high school theater review program.

It is 1937 and the world is coming apart at the seams—or at least Eugene’s world. His family is crumbling, his mindset is changing, and his love life is null. What can a boy do? Well, in Eugene’s case, write a memoir, which is exactly what he does in “Brighton Beach Memoirs”, a comedic play put on by Francis Howell North. In a classic coming-of-age story that brings both laughter and tears, Eugene Morris Jerome shares his unique take on life as he faces the daily shocks of family drama, puberty, and the looming World War. Opened in 1983, “Brighton Beach Memoirs” by Neil Simon has since won several Tony awards and been made into a movie, each rendition better depicting Eugene’s distinctive personality and dysfunctional family. Show your school spirit by voting for your school's Patch Athlete of the Week.

The girls soccer season continues on in St. Charles County and several players had big weeks. Some starred with numerous goals, some just managed to score timely goals. For others it was all about goal prevention.  Here are the nominees for the St. Charles County girls soccer player of the week for the week of April 16:  Bridget and Shannon Stewart—Fort Zumwalt South: The Stewart sisters from Fort Zumwalt South had quite a productive week for the Bulldogs soccer team. So productive, in fact, that it's impossible to split up Bridget and Shannon. The Bulldogs went 3-0 last week with and scored a total 10 goals. The Stewarts combined for eight of the goals. Shannon had a three-game goal scoring streak and put up four goals (one game winner) …

In a loss to Holt, Quinones went 2-4 with a run scored. The next day, on Tuesday, against St. Charles West, Quinones helped power the Bulldogs past the Warriors. New Football Districts on the Schedule for 2012

MSHSAA recently revealed a new football district format for the next two seasons.

District football is getting a new look around Missouri. The Missouri State High School Activities Association recently released District assignments for the 2012 and 2013 season. Under the old format, schools were placed in four or five-team districts and the last three to four weeks of the regular season became the de facto playoffs. A team that had a 0-7 record in the regular season could go 3-0 in districts and advance to the state tournament.  For example, Duchesne started 2010 with a 0-7 record but won two of the three district games and advanced to the playoffs against Warrenton. That system has been scrapped. Now each school is in an eight-team district that places a higher emphasis on game play. According to MSHSAA, schools will …

The Republican party has gotten used to being able to do pretty much whatever it wants, like insulting others (women, minorities, etc.) and ignoring international agreements such as those concerning the treatment of prisoners. They stand up to "protect" huge tax breaks for the very rich, while average people pick up the tab for the banking bailout that was signed into law by Bush. So, why would …   more ›

St. Charles Native Makes St. Louis NHL Debut

Brandon Bollig, a Francis Howell North graduate, fought the Blues' Ryan Reaves Tuesday evening in a losing effort.

St. Charles-native and Chicago Blackhawks winger Brandon Bollig wasted little time in making his presence felt during the St. Louis Blues' 5-1 win over the Hawks Tuesday evening.  Bollig, a Francis Howell North graduate, and Blues right winger Ryan Reaves rekindled a past dispute and dropped their gloves less than four minutes into the game. Bollig landed more than a dozen punches on Reaves as the two batted in the eventual draw. The 25-year-old Bollig, who played for the Junior Blues as a teen, logged just more than five minutes on the ice and seven penalty minutes during the game. When all was said and done, he finished a minus-1 for the game. The Blackhawks signed Bollig April 3, 2010 to a minor league contract and recalled him to the …
