The Francis Howell Board of Education took another step toward approving a budget for the 2012-13 school year. Following a work session in May to take a deeper look at the numbers, the board had the first reading of the proposed budget during its June 7 meeting. Chief Financial Officer Kevin Supple prepared the board to operate in the red next year. The General (Incidental) and Special Revenue (Teachers’) funds budget proposal shows Francis Howell running short $1.9 million. Supple has frequently given budget projections showing that, with a decrease in state funding and property taxes combined with an increase in salaries and other expense, the district would soon be faced with deficit spending. It was thought that the 2011-12 would be …

Brandon Bollig, a Francis Howell North graduate, fought the Blues' Ryan Reaves Tuesday evening in a losing effort.
St. Charles-native and Chicago Blackhawks winger Brandon Bollig wasted little time in making his presence felt during the St. Louis Blues' 5-1 win over the Hawks Tuesday evening. Bollig, a Francis Howell North graduate, and Blues right winger Ryan Reaves rekindled a past dispute and dropped their gloves less than four minutes into the game. Bollig landed more than a dozen punches on Reaves as the two batted in the eventual draw. The 25-year-old Bollig, who played for the Junior Blues as a teen, logged just more than five minutes on the ice and seven penalty minutes during the game. When all was said and done, he finished a minus-1 for the game. The Blackhawks signed Bollig April 3, 2010 to a minor league contract and recalled him to the …

With a 6-1 vote, the Board grants funding to a $2.4 million athletic facility on the Howell High School campus.
Francis Howell High School will get a new on-campus athletic complex. After two meetings filled with lengthy discussions about the project, the Board of Education approved the complex with a 6-1 vote. Board Treasurer Mike Hoehn, an outspoken opponent of the project because of what he considered safety issues, was the lone dissenting vote. The new complex will contain two baseball fields (one for varsity and one for junior varsity), a softball field and a football practice field. Howell currently has just one field for all sports to use, which has made scheduling at the school a challenge. The projected cost of the complex comes in $2.4 million and will be paid with money the District received from a 2008 bond issue. Joining the fields on …
