A thrilling weekend of women's basketball concludes with the Shockers claiming their first title.
The year before Jody Adams took over as head coach for the Wichita State women’s basketball team, the Shockers went just 3-15 in the Missouri Valley Conference regular season. Sunday afternoon, Adams and the top-seeded Shockers completed their turn around, winning their first ever MVC tournament title by beating the Redbirds of Illinois State 69-65 in a thrilling championship game at the Family Arena in St. Charles. The victory earns the Shockers a trip, their first ever, to the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament. The Missouri Monsters, who compete in the Ultimate Indoor Football League, will play seven home games at the Family Arena in St. Charles this year.
The Missouri Monsters kicked off their inaugural season on March 8 against Corpus Christi Fury in front of a crowd of more than 4,000 at the Family Arena in St. Charles, losing 74-37. The team play next at the Georgia Rampage on March 25. The Monsters will play seven home games in total this season. The next game at home is against the Windy City Hitmen on April 1. Teams will play nine games in four days at the Family Arena in St. Charles.
The Missouri Valley Conference will hold the women’s basketball tournament this week at the Family Arena. The seedings for the tournament are as follows: The first game Thursday will put Missouri State playing against Drake at 4:05 p.m., followed by Evansville and Southern Illinois. Four games are scheduled for Friday. The opening game has the Missouri State/Drake winner taking on Wichita State at 12:05 p.m. That game will be followed by Northern Iowa against Indiana State. Creighton plays the Evansville/Southern Illinois winner, and the last game Friday has Illinois State taking on Bradley. Designer from Webster Groves created logo and won competition.
St. Charles Chill, a minor league hockey team that will play at the Family Arena, unveiled its new logo design this week. The team selected a design submitted by Alex Flick, with aFLICKdesign, from the 50 submitted to their logo competition. Flick, of Webster Groves, won four tickets to the St. Charles Chilll and will be part of opening day events in October 2013. “We were overwhelmed by the number of responses and the quality of work that we received,” President/General Manager Nicole Kupaks said in a press release. “It was a hard decision, but we feel Mr. Flick’s design represents the image of our team well and will be embraced by the community.”

The St. Charles Chill, a franchise of the Central Hockey League, will start playing in the fall of 2013 at the St. Charles Family Arena.
Minor league hockey will return to St. Charles Family Arena in the fall of 2013. The Central Hockey League announced Wednesday that it will transfer the Laredo Bucks franchise rights to create the St. Charles Chill. The ownership group includes Gustavo Hernandez, Alfonso Aruindegul and Glenn Hart, all three businessmen based in Laredo, TX. The CHL has 11 teams across the country, including an expansion team that will start in Denver, CO this year. The closest team to St. Charles is in Independence, MO, the Missouri Mavericks. Residents can drop off recycled items fat
Information provided by Carol Felzien, spokeswoman for the city of St. Charles The drop off location for the Web Innovations and Technology Services Recylcing program has changed for July 20. Due to a scheduling change, the drop-off location will be located at the MoDOT commuter parking lot located at I-70 and Zumbehl Road (Noon to 6 p.m.) instead of the Family Arena. The recycling drop-off location will resume at the Family Arena on Friday, August 17. There is no charge for items dropped off however donations are requested to help defray recycling costs. Donors will receive tax letters, and are also guaranteed hard-drive security destruction. WITS will also offer free pick-up services the third week of every month for area businesses …

County spokesman said arena officials will start a new policy to keep litter off the most popular state park in Missouri, a 238-mile hiking and biking trail.
Charlie Schmidt has a complaint about neighbors who have trash blowing around. There are candy wrappers, water bottles, plastic bags, paper cups, ticket stubs. The trash blows their property and litters a section of the most popular state park in Missouri, the 238-mile-long Katy Trail. This neighbor happens to be the St. Charles Family Arena, operated by St. Charles County. The arena parking lot is separated from the Katy Trail by a 10-foot-wide grassy strip. “This is an insult to our county. People come here to use the trail, frequent our restaurants, stay in our hotels, and this is the face we give them,” Schmidt told St. Charles County Council members during their meeting Monday. ST. CHARLES - Devon Alexander is hoping a change of residence will lead to a change in results. Alexander, the former World Boxing Council junior welterweight champion, purchased a new house in the city of St. Charles just months after dropping the biggest fight of his career. Now, Alexander tries to re-ignite his climb toward the top in his new hometown. Alexander will fight Lucas Matthysse in a 12-round bout on June 25 at the St. Charles Family Arena.
