Time Through the Eyes of Faith

The movie "In Time" twists time and turns it into theology. Time is more than money in this movie. It is life.

The recently released movie, In Time, has not received many favorable reviews from film critics. From what I read in those reviews, I wanted to watch the movie through the eyes of faith. Questions of making the best use of our time while we are alive, of how to live a full and meaningful life and what happens when we die are questions of faith. I went to the movie theater hoping to be challenged to consider and reconsider those faith and religious issues in meaningful ways. I was not disappointed. In Time is a science fiction movie with no precise time setting. It seems to be earth in the future. A lot is not explained. It’s science fiction, and I am willing to enter into the writer’s story and engage with it. Time is the literal currency…

Holy Music Matters

An opinion column based on a comment in the Sound Off! section of last week's Suburban Journal.

Music matters in worship. It sets a tone and a mood. It energizes or calms down. The Bible has many examples of people singing for joy and praise to God. There are many reasons to include music in worship. One reason to sing in worship is that it is a quick way to bring people together as a group. Singing together is a shared experience and even three or four verses of a hymn or song starts to form a sense of community in that place at that time with the people gathered. I’ve planned a lot of worship services as a pastor but I’ve attended more worship services than I’ve planned. Church music matters a lot to the people in the pews or in the chairs around tables. It is the following comment in the Sound Off! section of the Suburban Journals…

Theology of the Circus: Tino Wallenda Shares Faith Message in St. Charles

Our lives can have better balance when Jesus is the focus.

Seeing a black metal scaffold at the front of the sanctuary at First United Methodist Church was a first for me. A section of tightrope cable was stretched between the scaffold--ready for Tino Wallenda, the patriarch of the Flying Wallendas, a multigenerational extended family of skilled circus performers.  I knew the Wallenda name and fame. This is the troupe of high-wire artists of amazing feats that first received modern day recognition under Wallenda’s grandfather, Karl Wallenda. It was his group that first performed the seven-person chair pyramid on the high wire. The Flying Wallendas perform their act without a net, and throughout the years there have been the falls that ended in death or paralysis. I did not know that Wallenda was a…

Fulfilling the Dream in St. Charles

Columnist sees signs in the King Community Worship Service that King's "I Have a Dream" speech is becoming real.

The button on my clergy robe stated, “Fulfill the dream.” The black and white metal button is slightly larger than a quarter and has a photo of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on it. It was given to me a few years ago by a man I also admire greatly. Clergy don’t usually wear buttons on their robes, but I did, along with my clergy stole this past Monday night at the community worship service in honor of King. I wanted to participate in the evening with this reminder. King made his dream known on Aug. 28, 1963 at the Lincoln Memorial in what is called his “I Have A Dream” speech. “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their…

Repeat the Sounding Joy Across St. Charles

Let these 12 songs guide you through the remainder of the holiday season.

I love Christmas music. Picture this: a young girl, with short brown hair, on a backyard swing set in July, swinging while singing "O Come All Ye Faithful"  in Latin. "Adeste, fideles, Laeti triumphantes; Venite, venite in Bethlehem." This would be me many years ago. I know, not right in the head.     Blame Bing. Bing Crosby and his "Merry Christmas" album is burned in my brain. It was one of two vinyl records that appeared in the middle of December throughout my childhood. The other record was "Music of Christmas" by Percy Faith and his Orchestra. The timpani is stirring on "Good King Wenceslas."  My anticipation for this music equaled my anticipation for Christmas morning and opening presents. I know, not right in the head. I've traded …

Faith Matters to St. Charles Residents and to Columnist

Rev. Kemery Baldwin will write a weekly column exploring faith.

Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see. -- Hebrews 11:1 [New Living Translation] Faith matters in a number of ways. First, because many of us living in St. Charles hold religious beliefs, practice a faith, and are part of a spiritual community, such as a house of worship.  Faith also matters because churches, non-profit agencies, faith-based organizations and other groups in St. Charles are active in living out the principles they profess. They offer programs, resources and opportunities for nurturing faith.  Many of these groups offer opportunities to help others in need of tasks performed or assistance with the basics of living. These people of faith work to …
