Duchesne Loses Wick Cup Hockey Game to Wentzville Holt

Wentzville Holt broke a 3-3 tie with just 49 seconds remaining in the game to clinch the Wickenheiser Cup for the Indians Monday in the Mid-States championship game.

Looking to win its first-ever Mid-States hockey championship Monday night, the Duchesne Pioneers were on the verge of forcing overtime before a last-minute goal by Wentzville Holt put the dream out of reach. Holt sophomore sensation Corbin Foppe scored the game-winning goal with just 49.5 seconds remaining in the game, which broke a 3-3 tie that had stood since 10 seconds into the second period and clinched the Wickenheiser Cup for the Indians Monday at Scottrade Center with a 4-3 win. Foppe took a long pass from Holt senior forward Austin Mossengren right on his tape before rushing in all alone on the left side and sneaking a wriste shot short side on Duchesne goalie Ted Bunton for the go-ahead goal. Just seconds later, the Indians were …

Duchesne Pioneers Set for Wick Cup Hockey Championship Against Wentzville Holt

The Pioneer hockey team has a shot at becoming Duchesne High School's first-ever Mid-States High School Hockey League champion tonight.

The Duchesne High School hockey team has a chance to make school history Monday evening at Scottrade Center.  The Pioneers have a shot at becoming the high school's first-ever Mid-States High School Hockey League champion when they face-off against Wentzville Holt. The puck is set to drop in the Wickenheiser Cup championship game at 5:30 p.m. at Scottrade Center in downtown St. Louis.  If Duchesne's bracket history is any indicator, the game could come down to the wire. The Pioneers have advanced via a mini-game win in its previous two playoff series—against Fort Zumwalt West and Marquette—this playoff season.  Duchesne is led by one of the best one-two scoring punches in the St. Louis-area in a pair of senior fowards, Steve Kinnison and …

Computers, Hardware Stolen From Duchesne High School

Items were taken from unsecured window.

Computers and other hardware valued at more than $13,000 was stolen from Duchesne High School overnight between June 5 and 6.  A thief took advantage of an unsecure screen on an unlocked window in a classroom at the back of the school sometime after 9 p.m. when football practice ended.  The items were taken from the IT director’s office. Terry Gravemann, president of the school who will retire at the end of June, said that damage to the school was minimal. The school is insured, he said. “It’s a situation that we wish didn’t happen but somebody had an opportunity,” he said.

Summer Sports Spotlight: Sam Chambers, St. Charles Post 312 American Legion Baseball

Recent Duchesne High grad drove in the game-winning run in Thursday night's game, and continues to be one of top hitters for the defending district champions.

Summertime baseball is Sam Chambers' time of the year. Now that's a bit unusual compared to most other local baseball players, who generally put all their effort and energy into the spring high school season. But the high school season hasn't been a whole lot of fun for Chambers the last couple of years, because his team at Duchesne High hasn't won a whole lot. In fact, the 2011 Pioneers won just one game the whole year.  "We were 12-15 this spring though, so it wasn't too bad," Chambers said, in a brief interview following a 5-2 victory he helped deliver with what proved to be the game-winning hit for his summer league club, the St. Charles Post 312 American Legion squad last week. "But we played a really tough schedule. We're kind of a …

A Happy Ending: Duchesne's 2012 Senior Class Graduates

Duchesne High School bids a fond farewell to its 2012 senior class

Family and friends gathered in the gym of Duchesne High School to witness the graduation of the 2012 senior class.  The May 17 commencement drew attention of the Archdiocese of St Louis and, of course, Patch.  This year’s graduation was a particularly special one to the Archdiocese and the school as this was to be the last for then acting president Terry W Gravemann.  Gravemann served the school for more than 35 years, lending his time and talents to students.  Investigative Reporter Christopher Nagus gave the commencement address to the graduating class.  The 1996 class graduate and KMOV reporter compared his own uncertain steps into the professional world to those of the soon to be former students.  Included with Nagus’s advice were the …

Rohlfing, Duchesne Oust Defending State Champ St. Dominic

Senior guard goes for 26 points, keeps team poised down the stretch to secure first district title since 2006.

Alex Rohlfing’s illness didn’t stand a chance. With a district championship at stake Friday at St. Charles West, Rohlfing, while battling the effects of a head cold, led the Duchesne girls basketball team to a 45-33 win and District 7 title over reigning Class 4 champion St. Dominic. “I’m actually a little sick right now,” said Rohlfing, a senior who scored a game-high 26 points. “But my coach (former Duchesne standout Monica Steinhoff) told me the best game she ever played in her life was when she was sick, almost puking. So I just had confidence to come out and do what I had to do.” Steinhoff, the Pioneers’ first-year head coach, heard rumblings during shootarounds that Rohlfing didn’t seem like herself. But she knew better. She was …
