Burger Battle: Final Roundup and Winner Declared

After visiting six local burger joints, "St. Charles Patch" declares a winner for the St. Charles Burger Battle.

Patch visited six burger joints in St. Charles. We visited two local favorites, two national chains and two Main Street staples. You can read our individual reviews of JJ’s Burgers, Smashburger, Loco’s Grill and Pub,  AAA Burgers, Lloyd and Harry’s and Uncle Joe’s after we give you the skinny on the town’s best beef. BEST BURGER ON MAIN STREET Uncle Joe’s put up a good fight, but honestly, they were no competition for Lloyd and Harry’s. You can’t beat 99 cents for a base price. The restaurant nickle and dimes you by charging for individual toppings, but the end result is a burger that has a ton of variety options for less than you’d pay at a drive-through. I was impressed with Lloyd and Harry’s selection, speed and friendly servers. If you…

Burger Battle: Uncle Joe's Bar and Grill Wins for Most Interesting Side Dish

For the past few weeks our resident restaurant reviewer is searching for the best burger in St. Charles. This week, she tried Uncle Joe's burgers.

Now that summer has come to a close, St. Charles Patch is searching for the best burger in the city. The recent review of JJ's Restaurant sets a high bar for burgers in St. Charles. However, there are some other worthwhile contenders. Throughout the next few weeks, we’re visiting the best burger joints in the city to see how their offerings stack up. When conducting a burger battle, how could I resist a place with a burger and fries painted on the window? Uncle Joe's is another one of Main Street's bars that happens to serve lunch. Like Lloyd and Harry's, it's clearly a bar first and a restaurant second, though it didn't have a minimum drink order. A dozen assorted sized tables dot the narrow dining area. The back wall hosts a couple of …

Burger Battle: Lloyd and Harry's Sit Down Meal Cheaper than a Drive-Through

For the next few weeks, our resident restaurant reviewer is searching for the best burger in St. Charles. This week, she tried Lloyd and Harry's.

However, there are some other worthwhile contenders. Throughout the next few weeks, we’re visiting the best burger joints in the city to see how their offerings stack up. There's no question that Lloyd and Harry's is more of a bar than a restaurant. I wasn't optimistic when the waitress told me the burgers were 99 cents, and there was a one drink minimum to order food. The drink could be soda, but you had to hydrate if you wanted to sit down. As I hesitated, two men pulled up beside me and rattled off specific burger orders without looking at the menu. I …

AAA Burgers Offers A Haven for Heavy Smokers

For the next few weeks, our resident restaurant reviewer is searching for the best burger in St. Charles. This week, she tried AAA Burgers.

However, there are some other worthwhile contenders. Throughout the next few weeks, we’re visiting the best burger joints in the city to see how their offerings stack up. Smokers, if you're looking for a place where you can still light up in peace, AAA Burgers is your new home. As a nonsmoker, stepping inside was frankly a shock. The smoke was so thick I actually staggered back outside and contemplated how badly I wanted to include them in the Burger Battle. For the smoking readers, I ventured back inside. AAA Burgers is much more a bar than a restaurant. The …

Burger Battle: Loco's Burgers Come With Lightning Fast Service and Creative Options

For the next few weeks, our resident restaurant reviewer is searching for the best burger in St. Charles. This week, she tried Loco's Grill and Pub.

The second skirmish in our burger battle took place at Loco’s Grill and Pub. Loco's is a medium-sized freestanding restaurant not too far from the New Town development. The decor has a sort of generic inoffensiveness that says they're trying to appeal to everyone without risking offending anyone by showing too much personality. Brown booths line beige walls which are dotted with colorful …

Burger Battle: The Search for the Best Burger in St. Charles

For the next few weeks, our resident restaurant reviewer is searching for the best burger in St. Charles. This week, she tried Smashburger.

We started the first skirmish in our burger battle at the appropriately named Smashburger. I like the idea of a restaurant that focuses on doing one thing and doing it well. That's Smashburger's schtick. It makes burgers. OK, it also makes chicken sandwiches, but treats chicken like a different kind of burger patty instead of a fundamentally different beast. Smashburger is a fast, casual …
