A winner in the Democratic Party primary was declared using unofficial results a day after voters went to the polls.
After battling three other candidates in the Republican primary election for Missouri's 2nd Congressional District, Ann Wagner has won the nomination by an overwhelming vote. Wagner, a Ballwin resident, and her campaign team hosted a primary watch event at the Hilton Frontenac Tuesday evening. More than 100 supporters, friends and family members attended the party in high spirits. "We're a grassroots organization, a people-oriented campaign," Wagner said. "I will be in Washington, not of it." Wagner served as a Republican committeewoman in Lafayette Township and then became chair of the Missouri Republican Party. The GOP frontrunner in the race for Missouri's Second Congressional District says she's focused on debating voters in the waning days of the primary campaign. One of her opponents says he's been trying to arrange a debate since March.
With two weeks left before the August 7 primary, candidates are scrambling to reach out to every possible vote, attending event after event and forum after forum. But time is running out for candidates to appear at the same time and in the same place. In the 2nd congressional district Republican primary, the last such opportunity may have taken place Tuesday, when Ann Wagner and Dr. Randy Jotte spoke at a St. Louis County Republican Women’s forum. In a recent email to Washington, DC, lobbyists, a fundraising worker for the campaign left out the fact that the Wagner has a little GOP competition in the race for the 2nd District seat for Congress.
According to her primary opponent, Randy Jotte, it seems Ann Wagner's campaign forgot she has an opponent in the primary — an oversight the campaign acknowledged, blaming a fundraising worker in Washington, DC. Jotte, of Webster Groves, forwarded Patch a Feb. 8 email from one of Wagner's campaign team members regarding Wagner's upcoming visit to Washington, D.C. The email reads in part: I wanted to see if you are available to help Ann Wagner out on her next trip to DC – we have a few events as well as 1-1 coffee times available. Her primary opponent got out of the race last month and along with her excellent fundraising numbers from last quarter has put Ann in a great spot to win this seat for MO-02. Two days after a Webster Groves doctor made the 2nd Congressional district Republican primary a three candidate race, the contest is back down to two in the running. Thursday morning, St. Louis attorney Ed Martin announced he would drop out of the GOP primary for Congress and instead challenge Chris Koster to become the state's top lawyer. Randy Jotte, an emergency room doctor at Barnes Jewish Hospital, has officially announced plans to run for the Republican nomination in the race for the second congressional district. Jotte, who is also an associate professor of Emergency Medicine at Washington University School of Medicine, made the announcement during a news conference this morning at the St. Louis Carousel at Faust Park, in Chesterfield. He plans to officially announce his candidacy in a news conference Tuesday, Jan. 24 at 9:30 a.m. at the St. Louis Carousel at Faust Park, which is located at 15189 Olive Blvd. in Chesterfield.
