Changing Casino Landscape Forces Owners' Hands

With revenue growth slowing in St. Louis' casino market, casino owners are being forced to rethink strategy.

St. Louis’ multibillion-dollar gambling market is the nation’s sixth largest, but growth here is slowing, which reflects the rest of the state and many other regional gambling markets, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.  According to the report, Missouri Gaming Commission figures show that casino revenue in the state over the four most recent fiscal years fluctuated between $1.7 billion and $1.8 billion. The figure for fiscal 2012 was $1.79 billion. Those figures include revenue from St. Charles' Ameristar Casino, which is in the process of being sold to Pinnacle Entertainment—also owners of St. Louis Lumiere Place and Lemays River City casinos—and Maryland Heights' Hollywood Casino. The decline in revenue is forcing casino officials to …

St. Charles, Maryland Heights Prepare For Loss In Casino Revenue

Ameristar Casino reports a 3 percent drop in revenue for July 2011.

With the recent economic downturn, officials from the cities of St. Charles and Maryland Heights say they are expecting less revenue from state casinos.  Revenues from both Harrah’s Casino in Maryland Heights and Ameristar Casino in St. Charles are down by 3 percent over last year. However, Harrah’s total revenues in July were up by 14 percent and Ameristar’s July revenue increased by 11.7 percent.  To make up for the expected loss in gaming funds, both cities have allocated less money from the gaming tax into this year’s budgets. Temporary Finance Director for the City of St. Charles Jerry Ponder said, because the city planned ahead, the decrease should have little effect on St. Charles. “I’ve noticed that the revenue is just a little bit…

I don't see any mention, in this article, of the upcoming new Kansas City casino. A casino at the Kansas International Speedway, being built by Penn National. This facility, with no requirement that it be on a river, will have superior highway access than its Missouri competitors, and with an investment of over $400 million, should have more amenities than all the MO boats, except for Ameristar. …   more ›

Former Gap Designer Heads St. Charles Fashion Week

Julie Stotlar also relaunches couture lounge in Clayton.

You see them on the catwalks of Paris, London and New York. You see them adorning women at important functions and television award shows. It's the couture dress, a one-of-a-kind outfit hand-stitched by a famous designer or fashion house specifically for an individual, and they can easily cost $20,000 and upwards. Couture has always been out of reach of most women, but not anymore. The woman who has been tapped to helm the third annual St. Charles Fashion Week in August has also relaunched her store in Clayton, taking it from a regular boutique to an authentic couture boutique. Julie Stotlar, a former designer with Gap, moved to Clayton from Miami for the simplest of reasons. Her brother's wife had a baby and she wanted to be close to the …

Rock in 2011, Eighties Style

Tribute Band Ushers in New Year at St. Charles Casino.

"New Year's Day" was an early hit for the rock band U2, released as a single in 1983.  You won't, however, hear it played on New Year's Day by the tribute band, "That '80s Band." "It's not really a party song," said Dan Duran, keyboardist for the band. "It doesn't have the right vibe for that situation." That '80s Band will ring in the new year with a performance beginning at 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 31, at the Bottleneck Blues Bar at the Ameristar Casino. The band will also perform Thursday night at the casino. That '80s Band formed almost seven years ago and, like many bands, has gone through various lineup changes over time. The band's current configuration features Duran on keyboards and vocals, Izzy Furreal on guitar and vocals, Valerie …
