Civil War in Missouri
Missouri Day at the First Missouri State Capitol this year looks at the Civil War in Missouri. October 17 from 10 to 4. Visit and learn!
As the summer winds down, we are starting to focus our energy to the upcoming thousands of school kids who come to the First Missouri State Capitol during the fall and spring for field trips. We decided a couple of years ago, that we would celebrate Missouri Day during the fall as well. Missouri Day was mandated by congress to celebrate those things Missouri. We thought this year, we would look at the Civil War. We didn't want to look at just battles. Missouri was torn apart by the Civil War. At one point, there were two governments. We did want to see what people were doing and all the different aspects that guided people through this difficult time. And so this year, on Wednesday, October 17, you can come by the site and talk to people from the Alton Historical Society (did you know there was a huge prison there?), the Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site, St. Charles County Parks and Recreation, Eugene Field House, Fort Davidson State Historic Site, listen to the music of the times, try hard tac, watch a brewing demonstration, look at mourning customs and costume, learn about famous Missourians, dance to the tune of a fiddler and much more all for free!! It runs from 10am to 4pm and we are inviting schools, church groups, retirement homes, homeschool families and everyone to join us to for this annual event. And did I mention it is FREE?
