Smarter Than a Fifth Grader...Or Not?

Are adults really that smart?

I've always considered myself a good listener, a strong problem solver and, most of all, a really good talker. Just ask anyone...they'll tell you that I talk a lot. The question is, is that a good thing? For a blogger, the answer would be yes. But, what happens if you run out of things to say?

I am a "jack of all conversations" with a little to say about a lot of different things. I am not really what I would call an expert on anything in particular, but I have a decent base knowledge about a lot of absolutely un-important topics.

So, when my son got me started playing "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader" on Facebook, I thought, "no problem." Wow - I was wrong! Apparently, my knowledge base is much narrower than I had originally thought. I was a decent student, but seem to have forgotten all of my science, history and geography. I can't tell you, in under 10 seconds, what country is to the east of Norway, or what the names of Saturns moons are.

Does that mean that I'm really not smarter than an average 5th grader? I have to guess that if I were to step into a fifth grade class at my childrens' school today, most of those students would have a step up on me academically - they do this all day, every day - but I have, at least I hope I have, more street smarts and savvy.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens. Maybe we should all take a step back to fifth grade every now and then for a refresher course.

I've had this conversation with friends myself. I insist that getting married, having children, and working sucks all of that 5th grade knowledge right out of your brain. It's replaced with stuff like changing diapers, paying bills, getting to work on time amongst a host of other things.
