Campers Explore Missouri History, Pioneer Life

The one-week camp wrapped up on Friday last week.

Young campers at the First Missouri State Capitol State Historic Site wrapped up a week of day camp by making birdhouses, cooking lunch for their parents over a campfire and getting up-close-and-personal with some Missouri fauna.

Sponsored by Missouri State Parks, the Hands on History Adventure Day Camp is in its second year. Sue Love, the camp coordinator told Patch that the camp was a resounding success this year, with the number of campers tripling from last year.

Interest in the camp may even prompt the addition of a second week of camp next year.

Campers took field trips to the Historical Society and the Boathouse, tried on period clothing and practiced pioneer skills such as fire-starting using a flint and steel.

Staff for the camp included First Capitol staff, volunteers and State Parks Youth Corps participants.
