God, the Government, and Me

God, the Government, and Me...how does being a Christ follower affect my responsibilities as a citizen?

Our Pastor is doing a sermon series on Sunday mornings called "God, the Government, and Me". Its a Biblical perspective on the nature of government, the purposes of government, our responsibility and relationship to government, and our response to governmental authority. As part of this series, Congressman Todd Akin will be speaking on "Citizenship" on Sunday, July 29, in both the 9am and 10:45am services.

So, I'm a citizen of the United States and I'm a Christian. Are my citizenship responsibilities different because I'm a Christ follower? What if I don't like what the government is doing? What if I take no interest and do not participate in the privileges of being a citizen? Interesting questions.

Pastor Harris said in Part 1 of the series - Why Government in the First Place, "There isn’t any single passage or chapter in the Bible that presents all the Bible has to say about government, but the point is that all through the Bible God expects His people to be the light of righteousness no matter what kind of government is in control, and by the way there are 45 plus types of government in our world…and the Bible does not say that any certain form of government is better than another." The Book of Romans has been called the Christian's Constitution, the blueprint for Christian citizenship. Could it be that the way we relate to our government is an indication of our commitment to Christ?
