St. Charles County, Missouri - The St. Charles County Council passed a resolution on Oct. 15 in support of Lung Cancer Awareness Month in November. The resolution, sponsored by District Three Councilman Mike Elam, also encourages businesses and restaurants in St. Charles County to support the month and go smoke free by choice.
The Council passed the resolution to raise awareness about lung cancer and measures that can be taken to reduce the risk. According to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, nearly 10,000 Missourians die each year from tobacco-related illnesses and more than 1,100 additional deaths are caused by exposure to second hand smoke. In addition, smoking-attributable disease is the third leading cause of death in St. Charles County.

“The Council cares about the health and well-being of our community,” said Elam. “St. Charles County has ranked among the healthiest counties in Missouri for four years, which is quite an accomplishment for our residents, businesses and organizations. I am proud to have sponsored this resolution and hope it raises awareness and creates an even healthier community.”
