Duchesne Pioneers Set for Wick Cup Hockey Championship Against Wentzville Holt

The Pioneer hockey team has a shot at becoming Duchesne High School's first-ever Mid-States High School Hockey League champion tonight.

The Duchesne High School hockey team has a chance to make school history Monday evening at Scottrade Center

The Pioneers have a shot at becoming the high school's first-ever Mid-States High School Hockey League champion when they face-off against Wentzville Holt. The puck is set to drop in the Wickenheiser Cup championship game at 5:30 p.m. at Scottrade Center in downtown St. Louis.

If Duchesne's bracket history is any indicator, the game could come down to the wire. The Pioneers have advanced via a mini-game win in its previous two playoff series—against Fort Zumwalt West and Marquette—this playoff season.

Duchesne is led by one of the best one-two scoring punches in the St. Louis-area in a pair of senior fowards, Steve Kinnison and John Hoemeyer.

Kinnison leads all St. Louis-area scorers with 66 points—39 goals and 27 assists. His dramatic breakaway overtime goal against Marquette on Feb. 24 was the play that sent the Pioneers in its first-ever Wickenheiser Cup championship game in school history.

Hoemeyer, meanwhile, has found the back of the net 23 times this season. Together, with his 22 assists, he's racked up 45 points.

In Duchesne's one-and-only game against Wentzville Holt this year, the Pioneers lost 7-3 to the Indians at the Lindenwood Ice Arena in Wentzville.

This time around, the Pioneers are hoping for a different outcome.

“We’ve played Holt and we know what to expect,” Duchesne head coach Dan Rupp told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “They’re such a fast team. They move the puck so well, but we’ll be ready for them.”

Tickets to the game are $9 and can be purchased at the Scottrade Center box office or online at ticketmaster.com. The game will also be aired live on Fox Sports Midwest
