Duchesne Loses Wick Cup Hockey Game to Wentzville Holt

Wentzville Holt broke a 3-3 tie with just 49 seconds remaining in the game to clinch the Wickenheiser Cup for the Indians Monday in the Mid-States championship game.

Looking to win its first-ever Mid-States hockey championship Monday night, the Duchesne Pioneers were on the verge of forcing overtime before a last-minute goal by Wentzville Holt put the dream out of reach.

Holt sophomore sensation Corbin Foppe scored the game-winning goal with just 49.5 seconds remaining in the game, which broke a 3-3 tie that had stood since 10 seconds into the second period and clinched the Wickenheiser Cup for the Indians Monday at Scottrade Center with a 4-3 win.

Foppe took a long pass from Holt senior forward Austin Mossengren right on his tape before rushing in all alone on the left side and sneaking a wriste shot short side on Duchesne goalie Ted Bunton for the go-ahead goal.

Just seconds later, the Indians were raising Mid-States High School Hockey League hardware at center ice of the Scottrade Center in downtown St. Louis.

The win gave Holt its second Wickenheiser Cup championship in three years—the Indians defeated Rockwood Summit in 2011.

Duchesne and Holt battled back and forth all night long.

Duchesne struck first with a goal from freshman forward Justin Meers less than three minutes into the game.

The Pioneers looked poised to take a two-goal lead just a few minutes later while on the power play, but a shorthanded goal from Holt's Mossengren—a bizarre play that saw Mossengren's initial shot deflected by Bunton roughly 15 feet in the air only to bounce off the goalie's left leg and into the goal—knotted the game at a goal a piece.

Not to be outdone, Duchesne responded with a power play goal just a few seconds later—a rebound goal from Pioneer leading scorer Steven Kinnison.

Trailing 3-2 at the beginning of the second period, the Pioneers scored another power play goal thanks to a wicked slap shot from senior defenseman Joseph Rupp, which tied the game and set the stage for Foppe's heroics more nearly 30 minutes later.

Sadowski said he considered resting his top two lines as the two St. Charles County teams appeared destined for overtime.

"That's always the tough decision when preparing for overtime. Do you rest your top guys to keep them fresh?" he said after the game. "But we put them out there and it paid off."

Corbin, who led Holt with 21 goals during the regular season, was named the game's MVP.
