St. Charles School District MAP Test Results

Some district schools will have to offer students additional tutoring starting this year.

Elementary and middle schools in the saw some improvement on state math and reading tests this year.

About half of the schools had a higher percentage of students scoring at grade level in either the math or reading tests this year. But in several schools, the percent of students who scored at grade level on the tests decreased or remained flat.

Just one school, Lincoln Elementary, made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in both reading and math tests. Three schools, Coverdell, Null and Harris, achieved AYP on the math test, but not the reading test. Five of the district schools failed to make AYP in either test.

"Overall in the district we've been very focused on student achievement," Danielle Tormala, assistant superintendent for curriculum, said. "Our scores are continuing to improve. They are reaching high standards, that is a reflection of our focus on curriculum."

Tormala said the MAP test results help school leaders identify areas of strength and areas in which they need to improve.

"Last year we had pretty substantial growth in all subgroup areas," Tormala said. "For us to hold consistent with that is pretty great. Of course we are always striving to improve."

had a jump from 51.2 percent to 58.8 percent of students reaching proficient or advanced on the math test this year, but had a smaller percent of students reach that level in reading compared to last year.

was a bright spot for the district's MAP scores. After failing to meet goals for achievement in either math or reading last year, the school this year met all of the benchmarks, with 64.5 percent of students achieving proficient or better in reading and 67.1 percent of students achieving that grade in math.

Students who attend schools that did not meet state benchmarks for two years in a row will have the chance to attend either Null and Blackhurst, the two schools that are not in "school improvement" status. More information on school choice is available on the district website.

Elementary and middle school principals last week talked to the Board of Education about their strategies for the upcoming year. The principals said they are working together to develop common expectations for students, teachers and principals among the six schools in a variety of areas.

A part of that effort is to look deeply at the ways teachers test student knowledge through the year. The principals are working to gather more meaningful data that will tell teachers if students are on track.

"Really it is about what do individual kids need to know and learn, how do we know if they learned it?" said Jefferson Intermediate Principal Kim Harris.

Principal Melvin Bishop said now the teachers are able to track the progress that each students is making, which means fewer students slip through the cracks.

"We've gotten a lot better at knowing our students," he said.
