Charles announced in March 2011 his plans to retire which gave the Board of Education several months to conduct a search for candidates. After a search process that involved input from staff and community members, the Board of Education selected Jeff Marion, current district assistant superintendent of human resources, as the new superintendent.

In addition to working as assistant superintendent of human resources, Marion previously worked as a high school principal in the Pattonville School District.
