This year, the event was scheduled for the night of the conference game against Fort Zumwalt East High School. With school called off, the game and Pink Out events will be rescheduled for later, said coach Ellen Parker.

This will be the third year that St. Charles West girls varsity team has hosted a “Pink Out.”

About three years ago a player saw a college do a similar event and thought the high school team should try it. The fundraising  element was particularly significant that year because a player on the opposing team had a relative with breast cancer, said Parker.

Last year, one of the St. Charles West players had a relative who is a breast cancer survivor who was recognized during the game.

“It’s really cool because you’re actually playing for a cause, and to help someone instead of just playing for yourself,” said team captain senior Taylor Staggemeier, 17.

This year, basketball teams from sixth, seventh and eighth grades will play in between the junior varsity and varsity games. The team will decorate the gym in pink and sell pink t-shirts to raise funds.

Staggemeier said the extra time off school might give the team a chance to raise more money.

“It’s a good cause,” said team captain senior Blake French, 17. “We just want to raise money to help out with the breast cancer.”
