Lincoln Elementary School Students Share Essays

Students wrote about topics about which they had strong feelings.

Several times a year, fourth graders at Lincoln Elementary School have a "writer's workshop" during which they get to share their most recent writing with one another.

The workshop gives them a chance to read their work aloud and get feedback from other writers. On Feb. 16, the classes shared essays about a topic they felt strongly about.

Principal Julie Williams listened in to their February workshops and noted how much the students have improved as writers since the beginning of the year.

"You get to have lots and lots of cousins," she read from her essay. "It makes you feel happy inside to know there are many people who love you."

Johnny Wehmeyer said favorite topics are easier to write about - like his dogs.
"I would be lonely without my dogs," he read from his essay.

Nate Guernsey decided to write about how he wants to be a math teacher eventually. It was an easy choice, because math runs through his head a lot, he said.

"(Writing) gives us time to get whatever you want out," he said.
