The Duchesne Pioneers basketball team is having a very good season. No, make that a great season.
The Pioneers arrived at Scottrade Center for the annual Coaches vs Cancer game with Peoria Notre Dame, 14-2. They stand atop the AAA large divison, perfect at 5-0. They defeated St. Louis University High 66-42 to win the MICDS Christmas tournament.
The Pioneers have prized wins over Borgia, and Ladue. Their only loses are to powerful Chaminade and Normandy.
An early evening win over Peoria Notre Dame was a little close to call. The Pioneers held off a late Irish rally to win 55-50.
"We couldn't hit any outside shots so we started packing it in," said Drew Moore, a junior. "We've all been playing together since the 5th grade. We want to win," said Moore.
Moore had 17 points and 9 rebounds. Ryan Tune led everyone with 21 points and 11 boards.
Down by 11, the Irish tied the game at 48-48 with 3:33 left in the game.
Sam Briscoe got a leaner for a 53-50 lead and the Pioneers held on to the 15th win of the season.
Coach Wade Bouslog looked at it this way. "We were able to get into the post easily in the first quarter. We thought it was going to be easy and we started forcing the ball. We have to understand we have to reverse the ball and keep it moving," he said.
"This was a good win for us," Tune said. "We didn't know a lot about them so it was hard to plan for them. We just have to toughen up when teams start coming back at us," said Tune.
