Community Bonds Together To Help Six Year Old With Cancer

Community bonds together to find help for a young child with a rare, aggressive form of cancer - and how you can become involved.

Alex Onkle. The first time I'd hear this name was this morning on the news—and he's already found a precious place in my heart.

You see, Alex may not make it to his seventh birthday. This tiny six year old is riddled with cancer. Specifically, Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumor Cancer. (Don't worry, I had to google it, too.) What that means is that he has an aggressive and rare tumor that primarily occurs as masses in the abdomen. The tumor is considered a childhood cancer that predominantly strikes boys and young adults. Alex was diagnosed with DSRCT July, 2010, and based on recent reports, his time is running out. Doctors found thirty eight tumors last year and he relapsed in March.

His mother is working on raising the money to be able to stay home with him, and his four older siblings, for a few months. And that's where we come in - on Sunday, April 29th, a fundraiser is being held to help a couple of this family's wishes come true. It is being held at Wentzville's Rotary Park from 1pm to 6pm.

According to ksdk.com,

"The theme is an early Fourth of July, complete with fireworks. They'll also have police cars, a pirate ship, clowns, magicians, pony rides and a petting zoo. They'll also have a barbecue and a volleyball tournament for adults.

Alex says he's excited."

At six years old, he is younger than the majority of my family. I cannot imagine coping with this on my own, and that is WHY I'd love to see the goals met.

He doesn't want to miss out on the Fourth of July. Wentzville intends to give him his very own fireworks display on Sunday. He also LOVES riding in police cars with Wentzville's local heroes - and if I heard correctly, he may even become an honorary deputy. With his mother being the sole breadwinner for this family, she cannot afford to miss work. This fundraiser needs to be a HUGE success.

Wentzville's mayor, Nick Guccione, has agreed to SHAVE his head if $5,000 can be raised, and the ultimate goal is to raise $10,000 to give the family an extra cushion.

Has sweet, courageous, Alex found a way into YOUR heart yet?

His picture is on the top of the flier for the event Sunday. That's all it'll take - just look at that smile. The smile through the pain of the cancer that's in so much of his body.
