Union Groups Rally Outside of Akin's St. Charles Office

A small brass band marched down Main Street with union members and students Thursday to protest in front of Congressman Todd Akin's office.

About 60 activists marched down Main Street Thursday afternoon and protested in front of in St. Charles. 

The event was sponsored by Missouri AFL-CIO. 

Mark Esters, a member of CWA Communication Workers 6355, came out to rally with working people whom he said are concerned about the upcoming election in which Akin will face Sen. Claire McCaskill.

Esters said his biggest concern is for public workers. He said he's worried about Akin not raising revenue to support vulnerable workers in the state. 

"The minority community is one of the hardest hit when it comes to unemployment," he said.

St. Charles County Republican Central Committee members Cheryl Bates and Carol Paul also showed up just to watch. 

Bates and other members of the Central Committee issued a resolution of support for Akin earlier Thursday. 

"The voters chose him at the end of the day," she said. 

Bates said she was surprised that so many Republicans have called for him to leave the race after he made comments about "legitimate rape" during an interview with a local television station.

"When you know him and you know what he meant... He didn't mean anythign offensive, he's just a defender of life," she said.
