St. Charles city has grown more racially diverse during the past ten years going from a population that 93.3 percent white to one that is 89.2 percent white.

The number of black residents living in the city rose to 3,889 people, or 6 percent of the population from 3.5 percent in 2000. The percent of Hispanic or latino residents also increased to 2,759 residents or 4.2 percent of the population.

In 2000, Hispanic or latino residents represented 2 percent of the city's population.

The changes to the racial diversity of the city are reflected in city schools, according to St. Charles School District Superintendent Randy Charles.

In 2010, whites made up about 80.4 percent of students enrolled in the district, while black students comprised 12.4 percent. In 2006, 84.1 percent of enrolled students were white while 10.2 percent of students were black.

Charles said the changing demographics have an impact on how teachers approach their instruction.

"It's not an academic ability difference, it's more reflective of culture," he said. "Communications among cultures are different and a big part of teaching is communicating with kids. As they come from different culture, we have to change our methods of communication. We have to adjust our instructional methods."
