Voting machines jam

Several voting machines reportedly jammed in St. Charles County today. The machines were fixed, according to Director of Elections Rich Chrismer, but a failure of the memory cards could lead to delays in reporting the outcome of the election. 

The election authority won't know whether the memory cards have failed until the polls close at 7 p.m. Read more about the problems here. 

Polls Busy in St. Charles

Some residents waited in lines to vote in St. Charles early this morning, but many locations had brisk wait times and a steady stream of people. 

Nicole Gattas, of St. Charles, voted this morning around 7:30 a.m. at Hope Lutheran Church and was in and out in about 20 minutes. 

Gattas said about 334 people had put ballots in the box by the time she left.

Bridget Allgier, 19, woke up at 4 a.m. to serve as an election judge. She directed voters to the correct voting location at the Columns Banquet Center. 

"It's been steady all day long," she said. 

Allgier voted by absentee ballot a few weeks ago and said the one issue she felt strongly about was Proposition B, which would raise the cigarette tax. Her parents own a gas station. 

"It didn't seem right," she said. "We'll see. It could be good. It may increase government profit, but not ours."

Around noon Mike Sommer stood in the rain holding a sign for his wife Chrissy Sommer who is running for the 106th District House seat. 

"I've worked the polls 10 or 12 times here and I've never seen this many voters," he said. 

Sommer stood near Morton Todd, the Democratic candidate in the 106th district.

Todd it's hard to say how he'll do in the election. "You never know. I think it'll be a good race." 

Chris Huelsing breezed in and out of the Columns Banquet Center around lunchtime. He made a point of voting in this year's election after he missed it four years ago. 

"I wanted to make sure to get my vote in," he said. 

A commenter named Boot said he went to Faith United Methodist Church on Droste in St. Charles to vote.

"I strolled right in, voted, and skipped on out. I was expecting a crowd because I went on my lunch break, so I was pleasantly surprised to find that there was none."
