St. Charles Businesses Now Required to Post Smoking/Nonsmoking Signs

Restaurants in St. Charles will have to post signs stating whether smoking is permitted or prohibited inside by January 2014.

Before people walk through the door of a business in St. Charles, they'll be able to tell whether it's a smoking or nonsmoking establishment starting in January.

Businesses will be required to post a sign stating whether smoking is permitted or prohibited by Jan. 1, 2014. The sign must have letters no smaller than 1 inch in height.

Violating the law would result in a fine of up to $500 or imprisonment up to 3 months.

The new ordinance was approved by the St. Charles City Council Oct. 1. Councilman Dave Beckering, who sponsored the bill, said the signs will let people know before they walk in the door whether they are going into a place that allows smoking.

The city council dropped plans to draft a smoking ban for the city earlier this year after the council received mixed feedback from the community on whether there was demand for a ban.
