South Main Street To Be Repaired in 2011

South Main Street will get a makeover in 2011. Plans are in place to repair the brick road, and add sidewalks and storm sewer drains between Boone's Lick Road and Reservoir. 

The estimated $1.3 million project will get $553,500 in Federal Enhancement funds. The project design is 98 percent complete, but as of Feb. 3, needed approval from the Missouri Department of Transportation. 

Once approval is given, the city will go out for bids. The project will take about 9 months in total, said Kevin Corwin. Some council members were concerned that shutting down that section of South Main Street would cut off an important thoroughfare in the city. 

City Councilman Richard Veit encouraged the city to offer incentives to a company that could complete the project more quickly. 

"I think nine months is an awful long time to shut down a connection to straighten some bricks," he said. 

The St. Charles City Council on Feb. 3 approved the projects that will be included on the 10-year road improvements list and heard an update on the streets projects currently in the works.

Many of the projects slated for completion in 2011 have both federal funding as well as funding from the St. Charles County Road Board. 

Construction is expected to start in 2011 for the following projects: 

• Installing traffic signals at Boschertown Road and Little Hills Expressway ($230,000).
• Reconstruct Diekamp Lane, a narrow lane ($550,000). 
• Reconstruct New Town Boulevard between Elm Point Road and New Town to have three lanes, a path, shoulders, storm sewers and roadside ditches ($3.5 million). 
• Add an exclusive right turn lane for southbound Old Highway 94 onto westbound Muegge Road ($560,000).
