"Everything is going really good," she said. "I've been really excited. We've gotten a lot of volunteers, we've knocked on doors and left literature at homes where they were obviously not home."

Sommer said most people in the 15th District are concerned about the economy and the amount of regulation coming from the federal government.

"They want the state to play a little bit of an active role in saying we need to stop," she said, adding that she agrees with them.

Sommer said many small business owners are afraid to grow because they aren't sure what additional regulation may be coming down.

What would you do to improve the economy?

"I'm the type of person who believes the government doesn't create jobs," she said. "What is the government going to do to create jobs? Get off the backs of the small businessman."

What are your priorities for state spending?

Sommer said those decisions come down to the budget committee. She said that they need to line by line examine the budget and see which programs are working and which ones aren't.

"Maybe we're staying within our budget, but it still has grown over the years," she said.

She said the state needs to protect seniors, veterans and those who cannot protect themselves, specifically mentally challenged and the unborn.

What are your thoughts on education spending?

Sommer said she supports home schooling, private schooling and public schooling and said she thinks it should be up to parents to choose.

"I think we need to ensure that if we have a funding formula as we do now, we need to fully fund it," she said.

Sommer added that she'd like to see an end to federally mandated testing, such as the Missouri Assessment Program.

"They are learning what they need to learn at that level but they are so focused on those tests, it's taking away from the teaching," she said.
