Council Will Consider Banquet Center on South Main

Sheri Steffans has requested a conditional use permit for a banquet center and chapel.

St. Charles City Council will consider a request to build a banquet center and chapel on South Main Street.

Sheri Steffans, owner of the Heart of St. Charles, is hoping to build the Old Stone Chapel and Banquet Center at 1106 South Main Street.

The St. Charles Planning and Zoning commisison in January approved an application for a conditional use permit for the banquet center. The matter will go before the St. Charles City Council Tuesday for a public hearing. The council will likely vote on the issue during the Feb. 19 meeting.

Banquet centers were not a permitted use on South Main Street until the city council in March changed the zoning codes to allow them in the Historic Commercial District.

The lower stone portion of the building currently on the property will be renovated into a chapel. A 200-seat banquet room will be built as a new addition to the stone building.

City staff has recommended Steffans build a stone or brick wall on the front of the property to help screen the parking lot which will stretch along South Main Street. In addition, they recommend she consider putting in a sidewalk connection between the public parking spaces and the property.
