City to Add Dual Turn Lanes from Muegge Road to Mexico Road

Several major roads in St. Charles will get a complete overhaul in 2014 and 2015. The St. Charles County Road Board recently awarded funding for several projects in St. Charles. 

One of those projects is designed to ease congestion at Muegge Road and Mexico Road. The city previously studied possible solutions to traffic problems at Cave Springs and I-70. 

One solution that will be implemented in 2014 will be widening Muegge Road in front of the QuikTrip south of Mexico Road. This will allow crews to add a second left turn lane to the road. Construction is expected to start in 2014. 

Other projects include: 

• Pavement Inventory and Rating Project: St. Charles will participate in a county-wide evaluation of roads to establish a uniform set of pavement-rating criteria. Other participating municipalities include St. Peters, O'Fallon, Lake Saint Louis, Wentzville and St. Charles County. The County Road Board will fund $400,000 of the evaluation, the city's cost is $23,899. 

• Traffic Flow Improvements at Muegge and Mexico: The city will add an additional lane in front of the QuikTrip on the south side of Muegge Road, which will allow the city to have dual left turn lanes. The city's cost is $545,000, other funding is from East-West Gateway and St. Charles County Road Board. Construction will start in 2014.

• Traffic Flow Improvements at Kingshighway from Jefferson to Monroe:  The city will upgrade the signal at Kingshighway and Elm Street and replace the signal at Jefferson and Kingshighway. The sidewalks and intersections will be upgraded and made ADA compliant. The city will pay $60,121 for the project, remaining funding is from East-West Gateway and St. Charles County Road Board. Construction will start in summer 2014. 

• Fifth Street Improvements from Bass Pro to Boone's Lick Road: The city will reconstruct the roadway between Bass Pro and Boone's Lick Road. Cost to city is $364,000, the additional $1.45 million will come from St. Charles County Road Board. Construction will start in 2015. 

• Harry S. Truman Blvd. Improvements from West Clay Street to Ehlmann Road: This will be a total reconstruction of the road. The City will pay $1.02 million for this project; the St. Charles County Road Board will fund the remaining $4.08 million. Construction will start in 2015.
