Woman Tried to Grab Officer's Handgun During Struggle, Police Say

Officers said Desiree Freshwater began kicking and trying to bite them when they attempted to arrest her Friday.

A St. Charles woman faces criminal charges after she attempted to grab a police officer’s handgun from his holster during a struggle Friday.

Desiree Inez Freshwater, 29, of the 2400 block of North Eighth Street in St. Charles, was charged Monday with two counts of first-degree assault on an officer, attempting to disarm an officer, resisting arrest and third-degree assault on an officer, a misdemeanor.

St. Charles Police said officers were standing by as Freshwater removed her items from the home but she did not follow their instructions.

When one of the officers told her she was under arrest, she began to walk away. When the officer grabbed her arm, she began kicking at him, police said. A second officer came to assist and Freshwater began biting and kicking the second officer, according to a police report.

During the struggle, Freshwater grabbed one officers handgun and began to remove it from his holster “in attempt to kill” the officers, police said.

The officer was able to force the weapon back into the holster and ripped her hands from the grips, police said.

According to court documents, Freshwater has an arrest history that includes possession of a controlled substance, manufacturing a controlled substance, assault and driving while intoxicated.

Freshwater is being held in St. Charles County Corrections. Bail was set at $50,000.
