St. Charles Police Offer Voucher for Free Drug Testing Kits

Sgt. Todd Wilson says testing kids provides them an excuse to say no.

St. Charles Police Department is offering free drug tests to parents of teens, in hopes of helping parents recognize and address problems with substance abuse early.

“Unfortunately, friends often try harder to make kids who say no to drugs, alcohol and tobacco feel like outcasts,” said Sgt. Todd Wilson in a video posted on YouTube. “These home testing kits have emerged and provide privacy and provide kids with the socially accepted response of, ‘My parents test me.’”

A voucher to get the free testing kit is being offered with a partnership through the Missouri Police Chiefs Charitable Foundation and testmyteen.com. The kits test for cocaine, amphetamines, marijuana, opiates, like codeine, morphine, heroin and narcotics, methamphetamine, barbituates, benzodiazepines, oxycodone, ecstacy, and methadone.

Wilson said testing kids for drugs, alcohol or tobacco at home can provide a way for teens who have abused drugs or alcohol to rebuild trust within their families.

“In reality, kids need a socially acceptable way to say no to drugs and alcohol,” he said. “They can simply say, ‘My parents test me.’”
